Subject: Re: FW: Wayfarers briefing 21 Oct 04 - 'C' group
Hi Brian
I was also with Fuzz being an `easy rider` myself and although I did not go on to Claygate, returning direct to Addlestone, experienced no heavy rain and happily no blowouts of rhe sort you had. The pub was called `The Walking Mare ` and the beer was good also.
It was less than a mile out of Cobham.
Albert
Thanks for that Albert.
My note about IoW next March is withdrawn, since the date clashes with our anniversary dinner - as nobody pointed out.
Instead, the following week 09Mar05, when we are due at Addlestone, would make a good launching point for a two nights away trip to the Oxford area.
Please let me know if this grabs your interest, as I may have a good hotel offer available if we commit early. Details to those responding.
Brian

Hello All
For me, yesterday was enough to put anyone off cycling forever!
Punctured
by an upturned drawing pin on the road near Epsom College, in pouring
rain I
fitted the first of my spare tubes only to find it wouldn't inflate, so
off
with the tyre again to fit the second spare. This seemed OK until a
sudden
deflation, so with no more spares and no puncture kit, I walked the
mile to
Halfords to buy two new tubes and a repair kit. I couldn't remove the
locking ring, so had a go with pliers borrowed from Halfords which
resulted
in the stem falling apart - obviously the reason for the blow-out.
Rang
leader Pete to say I wouldn't make 11's at Bockett's, fitted new tube,
had
coffee and clean-up at The Edmund Tylney (Wetherspoons Leatherhead) and
set
off to catch up. Before Ryka's the front wheel was flat again and it
was
still pouring. Fitted second new tube and onwards to Pixham narrow
bridge,
where I dislodged and relocated a car wing mirror as I scooted to the
queue
front - the ensuing abuse was as if I'd wrecked his lovely pram. It
was
1pm when I reached Newdigate, so I stopped and rang Norman to see if
'B'
group was nearby - no reply - but I saw Norman and Les later and
learned
that they lunched at Mayford, 20 miles away. Got to the Gate at 1.30
to
learn that Ed was not there, as expected. Had a nice whitebait lunch
and
the sun came out - ain't cycling great? Ed rang to say he was at
Rusper
and couldn't find The Gate (he once named it his favourite pub), so off
to
Rusper to meet Ed, but front wheel puncture number three (or 4 or 5)
intervened. Both my new spares were punctured, so while I patched
tubes,
Pete M kindly did the hard bit with the tyre levers and we all set off
to
Denbigh's. Something was rubbing and I couldn't keep up until Pete B
pointed out that my mudguard stay was rubbing, after straightening
which, I
flew. I wonder, how many punctures do I qualify for under the newly
reinstated puncture recording regime? Still, it was a good job
nothing
like this happened last week when we went to Hersham and Walton, as I
found
on route that I was without pump. Will he ever learn, we ask?
Pete Mitchell writes: 11's at Bockett's Farm found several undecided
riders
due to the heavy drizzle rapidly becoming heavy rain. In the event,
Pam,
Bob, Pete B, Vic, Ray and I headed south to "The Gate" Ifold for lunch.
Mobile phones came into their own as first Brian was able to tell us he
had
a puncture situation (which he may just have mentioned) and would meet
us at
the Gate. Ed later contacted to say he was at Rusper "The Star", so we
joined him on our way back to tea at Denbies, where Vic demonstrated
how to
upset a coffee pot into a tray of tea cups without overflowing! (and
without
upsetting the staff). A dry afternoon with a strong tail wind made
the
outing very worthwhile (and so say all of us).
Les Johnston writes: Six of us, Terry Lowe, Norman Goody, John
Conacher,
Mike Withers (as far as Effingham) and John Gaunt, who mentioned at
Bockett's not to wait for him if he got dropped - he must have had a
premonition because his tyre and tube blew up before Effingham. Four
of us
carried on to lunch at Mayford "The Bird in Hand". On to tea at West
Horley
"Squires Garden Centre". Capes and wet weather gear were needed
between
11's and lunch, but most of the time it was only damp. Dry after lunch
until I got about three miles from home. I clocked 53.71 miles.
In response to circulating draft AGM minutes, Carole has prompted this
amendment: " Item 4 - Secretary's Report - circulated prior to and at
the
meeting. Norman Goody noted that there was no mention of the
Wayfarers
team entering the Dieppe Raid in June, and coming home with a cup. The
Wayfarers team was: Terry, Norman, Liz, Lynda and Carole, joined by
two
Tony's from the Saturday Section. The team raids Dieppe again 10-12
June
2005." Apologies for missing this valid contribution.
Nothing heard from Easy Riders at Walton, although Harold Fifield and
Philip
Marks rang earlier in the week.
