Subject: Wayfarers briefing 16Dec04
Hello Wayfarers
It was lovely to see Margaret Croad back with us after a long recuperation, or that's what I thought, but she has seen half the world since we last saw her. Welcome back, Margaret.
Apologies from Frank (and me) for missing Jen off last week's 'A' list (after all Jen's effort to be with us at elevenses, I should have also spotted her omission).
When I saw email from Les, I thought it was about the 'B' group ride, but it was a request to clarify our next (22Dec04) elevenses venue, which is Walton Day Centre, Manor Road Walton on Thames KT12 2PB MR 102667, not Walton on the Hill, Walton Firs or Walton Gaol.
Albert says he must have got his wires crossed as he was under the impression `C` group was meeting for elevenses at Cobham while all those hairy hill-climbers (will our Pat, Irene and Pam still love you, Albert?) were at Leatherhead. We should all know by now that we go to Cobham on every first Wednesday and no other times, Hazel, Thelma and Joan opening the RBL Club specially for us. He writes: before leaving home I checked to see who was leading like I usually do.
It was Ron and he turned up (well, Ron Beams) with Bill and Margaret Squirrell. I was sure this Ron was on his way home again which left me to choose a solo ride. Feeling in need of exercise I flogged up the hills of Plough Lane and had a pint and lunch at The Mucky Duck. I made a bit of a ride of it by pressing on to Ripley and thence home via Pyrford Road, West Byfleet and Rowtown (another short but steep climb). Sorry about that Brian. I hope to do better next week!
Lynda greets me: "Hi, Mr. Storey! Hope you have informed the Sou'Wester editor how to spell your name!" (I'm not about to add my moan to Clive's Christmas cheer - I hope he enjoyed the children's carol service which we made space for at Leatherhead). Lynda continues, Albert wasn't out today (Oh yes he was - Oh no he wasn't) - so on behalf of we 'C' group :-
Thanks once again to Terry for this report:
Pat led Gill, Bill, Harold, Les, Norman, Terry and profiled Ray from Leatherhead south along the A24 to turn into Pixham Lane then shortly east onto the A25. We got away from the traffic riding via Brockham, Gadbrook and Leigh to Norwood Hill where we practiced for the downhill part of next year's competition. Passing The Rising Sun where 'A' group were recovering from their exertions, we stopped at the Hungry Horse in Charlwood, which also serves large portions!
Ray left the party after lunch. Our return was up Russ hill, past Lowfield Heath Postmill to turn right into Partridge Lane. Shortly we turned left into Burntoak Lane which led us past Cudworth Manor - the house with a moat, which was new to some of us. Into Newdigate, then north past Henfold lakes to Dorking. A unanimous decision was to miss tea to get home before dark (Terry certainly did!). A very nice day, much better weather than forecast, we even saw the sun in the afternoon.
Ron Weedon led 12 'C' group riders out today. Margaret was out after 11 months - the last nine weeks touring around 'down under'. It was a pleasant, mild day which improved as we went on. We left the Day Centre and headed towards Effingham Common. Going on to Bookham Common, Ron knew all the side roads and pathways (ex. BT engineer), said he had been up most or all the telephone poles we passed! We got to Bookham and the sandwich brigade went to the nearby church and the rest of us had an enjoyable lunch at The Anchor - I had a tasty plaice, chips & peas for £3.95! Does that beat Wetherspoons? After lunch, the sun shone; 6 of us headed back through Fetcham, where Beryl got a puncture. Ron picked out a small piece of flint from the tyre, then many hands helped to put new tube in and then we were off. Had a leisurely ride through Randall's Park, where we stopped to admire a heron on the bank. Got back to Leatherhead Day Centre, where it was in full swing! Drums and all. Tea for six was on Beryl. Then we made our own ways home. By the time I got back to Peaches Close, Cheam - 4pm, there was a brilliant sunset. So I stopped a while, before going for my usual swim and sauna. My lead next week; a new area - a new pub. See you, Lynda.
Ray (Dare - not photogenic Rex) writes: With the weather looking promising, Brian, Bob S, Pete M, Pete B, John M, Ed, John S, Irene and I departed from Leatherhead, climbing to Headley, crossing the Heath to Pebble Coombe and descending to Betchworth and thereon to Leigh, climbing again to the Fox Revived at Norwood Hill and descending to Charlwood. The Rising Sun put on enough food to revive any of us!. We were later surprised by the re-appearance of Pam and Vic who had somehow got mixed up with 'B' group. Pete M left earlier than the rest of us to collect Sou'westers for distribution. The weather having brightened up for our return, our ride homewards was via Parkgate, Brockham and West Humble, where we parted company, John, Ed and I climbing Bagden Hill and descending to Bookham where John left us being near home and Ed continuing home with me to enjoy tea and cakes Beryl had kindly laid on (flat cakes? - Off the back, I didn't spot the split and continued to Mickleham before realising - sad really, as I was looking forward to Beryl's cakes and to trying not to spill crumbs on the new carpet - Brian). A comparatively low 32 miles from Fetcham return.
Olleh Brian
